In this story, we would like to share that beautiful relationship with you. It was never an easy one to build. Asia is like a stubborn baby in a large body. She does what she wants and rarely listens to anyone. Many may wonder how a small mahout can handle such a stubborn elephant, and why elephants still need mahouts. The answer is that elephants that have grown up with humans cannot return to the wild on their own. Therefore, mahouts are like guardians, ensuring the elephants’ health and safety. Caring for an elephant isn’t about power; elephants are very intelligent, and they will never simply follow orders. They only open up when they truly trust.

Reading Her Heart

The deep connection between a mahout and an elephant has been built on sharing every moment of life together, just like a family. P’Tualek has dedicated his life to this special connection, which has allowed him to know Asia better than anyone else. Instead of getting mad when she rarely listens to him, he chooses a deeper approach to understanding.  P’Tualek’s method is rooted in partnership and mutual respect. He spends his days observing Asia’s moods, learning her unique habits, and monitoring her health and relationships within the herd. This bond isn’t born of commands, but of years spent together, until they understand one another like family.

We once saw Asia play in the water to her heart’s content, and when she finished, she walked straight to Grandma Numsook, the elder elephant who is like a grandmother to her. P’Tualek never called her back or stopped her. He simply watched from a distance with a smile, knowing that the best care is to allow her to live on her own and be the elephant she was meant to be.

The Biggest Protector

The reason Asia chooses to listen to him, even when she doesn’t have to, lies in memory. Elephants have an incredible capacity to remember people for decades through their voices and scents, recalling exactly who was kind to them and who was not. Over the years, P’Tualek has offered Asia nothing but gentleness. That is why she chose him, not because she had to, but because she wanted to. On days when she is stubborn, he can only smile and let her be, because an elephant that can still be stubborn is an elephant that is happy and free to be herself.

That’s exactly why the name “Tualek” feels so contrary to his size. In Asia’s world, this small human is the biggest protector in her entire life. He never had to be her boss to tame her. He simply poured his kindness into her life, year after year, becoming the only one this stubborn elephant chose to give her heart to. And for us, that is the most beautiful thing.
